UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME

COMMON COUNTRY ASSESSMENT OF DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGES IN GUYANA - May 2005

Guyana's development policy is largely based upon its National Development Strategy (2001-2010), which sets out five overarching objectives:

  • To attain highest possible rates of economic growth;
  • To eliminate poverty in Guyana;
  • To achieve geographical unity;
  • To attain an equitable geographic distribution of economic activity; and
  • To diversify the economy.

Consistent with the National Development Strategy (NDS) and with the thrust of the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper (PRSP) and the Highly Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiatives, Guyana is pursuing a pro-poor growth development policy. This includes political reforms and improvements to citizen security, the strengthening of public sector management and the judiciary, investing in human capital by improving access to health, education and social protection as well as improving the retention of personnel in these sectors, and reducing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
